SAILING CONDITIONS: Iskar Lake is situated close to two mountains and at about 815 meters above sea level. It has oval-channel shape and is going in south-east to north-west direction, with mountains on the south-western shore. The lake is 10km long and about 3km wide in its widest. The inland situation and chanell-ish shape of Iskar Lake determines the prevailing winds. The “normal” winds follow in the lake direction - either north-western or south-eastern. The stronger the gradient winds above the area, the less oscillations on the course there would be. In absence of a front crossing, there are the typical lake breeze winds forming along its length but with a lot stronger oscillations, both in strength and direction. The typical oscillation though is to the north of the main breeze direction. The wind speeds can vary a lot depending on the “big picture” - presence or absence of a gradient wind mainly. In late September the chances for stronger winds are greater than normal. In days without a weather front it is possible to have some stronger(15-25kn) catabatic winds, as the two opposite ends of the lake are the lowest surrounding points where cold air can flow in violently. The most common low wind conditions are with 8-10 knots of oscillating thermal breeze. The main daily temperature for the area is about 20-25 degrees. By night normally there is a drop by 10dg, due to the mountainous surrounding landscape. The water temperature is around 22 degrees.
